SPRING 2013 chess camp

Novi Woods Elementary, KIVA 

Beginner Chess (Grades K-12)

Chess players of all levels are welcome!  This program will include lectures, tournaments, game analysis and other components of chess training.  The objective of the program is to give students the opportunity to study basic chess principles while having fun playing chess and competing in a friendly environment.  Students must provide a chess set for class.  The program will end with a final tournament with trophies for each participant.  A $23 material fee is required and payable to instructor at first class meeting.

WHAT IS CHESS?


At its simple level, chess is a game: it's fun and entertaining. For this reason alone, it has obvious appeal for children and young adults. However, chess has real advantages over other forms of entertainment. It is inexpensive and available everywhere

Despite its intellectual nature, chess in extremely social game; it is built upon human interaction and demands honesty and mutual respect.


Like a sport, chess appeals to our competitive instincts. Unlike other scholastic sports, however, chess demands no physical prowess beyond mental stamina, and is therefore equally accessible to all types of children. It is also one of the few "sports" in which young girls are perceived as being equal to young boys. Chess' highly competitive aspects draw many outstanding athletes to the game.

The art of chess is clear to anyone who plays or even observes it casually. Chess players have techniques and "game personalities" unique to them.

Finally, chess is a science in that it demands of its participant rigor and logical thinking.

Students are welcome to enjoy learning the game chess, or competing at a competitive level in our after school program

Students will have the opportunity to develop and work on their chess skills, as well as to play competitively during the school year.

The exciting program includes group and individual lessons, game analysis, tournaments, matches, simuls and other components of chess training.
